Definition - Solar Energy

Solar energy is energy provided from the sun. It is a form of renewable energy. Photovoltaic cells or solar cells are used to turn the energy from the sun into electricity. Photovoltaic cells generate electricity with no moving parts, no noise and produce no pollution.

Solar thermal technology uses heat gained directly from sunlight, the most common usage being in solar water heating. Solar thermal electric generating plants create steam from the collection of heat energy, which is used to drive a turbine which produces electricity. Solar energy is also used to a limited degree in the development of solar-powered vehicles. Presently, using solar energy to generate electricity is more expensive than using coal-fired power stations however pollution levels are significantly lower.
