Hello and welcome the June 2001 edition of the AVEL newsletter. Each month
we will bring you news about the latest engineering and IT resources on
AVEL, the latest services and the latest news.
This month
we have made the newsletter available in HTML.
A new feature
section has been added to the newsletter which provides a glimpse of International
web sites of interest.

NEW
SITES ON AVEL
AVEL now contains 3443 quality records. Since our last newsletter
we have added another 108 new records. You can browse
the new sites by subject area or look at
all the new sites entered.

AVEL's
BEST OF THE BEST
AVEL contains links to only quality websites. We handpick them so
that you can save time searching. That said, sometimes we find sites that
deserve a special mention. This month we highlight two great japanese
sites (Hitachi
Research Institute and the
Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change
Research), as well as sites dealing with
risk engineering and building
consultancy.
Risk
Engineering Society

The Risk Engineering Society has a new look web site and is looking great.
The Society provides a forum for education and knowledge transfer across
all aspects of risk engineering. Special focus is put upon risk issues
associated with engineering endeavours, such as construction, design,
safe plant operation and management. The web page contains information
about upcoming meetings and conferences. You can submit information about
your own event for inclusion on the page. An archive of Society's newsletter
is also being developed, with past issues from 1997 and 1998 currently
available.
IBC
Institute of Building Consultants

The Institute of Building Consultants (IBC) is a Division of the Queensland
Master Builders Association (QMBA), providing consultancy service to the
community; the building and construction industry and QMBA members. The
site has an excellent FAQ section, that will be of interest to property
buyers, as well as builders and developers. Read the latest newsletter
online or join in an online discussion forum.
Hitachi
Research Institute

Based in Japan, The Hitachi Research Institute (HRI) is a member of the
Hitachi group. Their priority research areas include: electronic government;
e-commerce and financial system; new business strategies for "the advanced
integrated business model of manufacturing·sales·development"; R & D strategies
for nanotechnology development; business strategies for biotechnology;
and competitive strategies for industrial system business. The site provides
details of current research areas (including results for some areas, indepth
economic forecasts, and news releases.
The
Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN)
http://www.apn.gr.jp/
The Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) is an inter-governmental
network whose primary purposes are to foster global environmental change
research in the Asia-Pacific region, increase developing country participation
in that research, and to strengthen links between the science community
and policy makers. The APN offers project funding of up to $US 100 000
for projects and workshops that fall within APN guidelines. The site provides
fulltext project reports, a newsletter, interactive events & news
postings, and links to global change data.

SciTech
NEWSLETTER
The latest edition
of the SciTech newsletter (produced by United States-based
National Science Foundation) is now
available from the AVEL website. This month's newsletter looks at the
topical issue of the impact of the Web the publishing of original research
results. Explore this issue the Nature
journal's Online Debate site: Another great site that is showcased
is the:
UMUC-Bell Atlantic Virtual
Resource Site for Teaching with Technology. A collaborative project
of the Center for the
Virtual University and the Center for Teaching and Learning at the
University of Maryland University College,
this site aims to help teachers develope good practice in adopting technology
in their courses.
